Newtons Junior School Volunteering Changing Lives, One Child at a Time

At Newtons Junior School, nestled in the heart of Mbale City, Uganda, we believe that every child deserves access to quality education, a nutritious meal, and a safe environment to grow and dream. Yet, for many of the children in our care—especially those from vulnerable or orphaned backgrounds—this remains a daily challenge.

🤝 A Call to Support Vulnerable Children

Many of our pupils come from underprivileged families and face extreme hardship at home. For some, the meal they receive at school is the only one they will have that day. Others walk long distances without shoes or school materials, but they come with open hearts, eager to learn. It is our mission to provide these children not only with academic knowledge but also the nourishment and care they need to thrive.

🥣 Feed a Child, Fuel a Future

Through our Daily Meal Program, we ensure that every child receives at least one warm, nutritious meal a day. This keeps them in school, improves concentration, and supports healthy growth. But we need your help. For just 1,000 Ugandan Shillings a day (about 25 cents USD), you can help a child study with a full stomach and return home with hope.

Your small daily contribution goes directly toward:

  • Feeding a child each school day
  • Providing basic school supplies
  • Supporting teachers and caregivers
  • Maintaining a safe, child-friendly learning environment

🌍 Join Us: Volunteers Welcome

We proudly host a vibrant volunteer program, welcoming individuals from all over the world. Whether you’re a student on a gap year, a retired teacher, a professional, or simply someone who wants to give back, your time, talents, and passion can leave a lasting mark.

As a volunteer, you can:

  • Teach or assist in classrooms
  • Help with sports, music, arts, and storytelling
  • Support in the kitchen or garden
  • Lead health, hygiene, or language workshops
  • Simply spend time mentoring and encouraging our little learners

Volunteering at Newtons Junior School is more than a cultural exchange—it’s a chance to be part of a growing family that believes in transformation through education.

💚 Be the Change

We invite individuals, families, schools, churches, and organizations to become sponsors, donors, or volunteers. Whether it’s $0.25 a day, a fundraising initiative, or a few weeks of your time, your support directly impacts the life of a child who is eager to learn and grow.

Let’s nurture minds, fill hearts, and build a brighter future—together.

What Volunteers Say About Us

Our five weeks at the Junior School were truly appreciated. Ssembatya is a very hard working man, balancing running a school and doing medical studies in Masaka, but he still takes the time to ensure his volunteers feel welcomed and supported.

The school’s recent move due to an increase in rent prices gives it some challenges, sometimes we were short on chairs or had to make do with slightly broken blackboards, but the dedication of the staff ensured that, even with limited resources, the pupils were lighted to lighten.

We hope to continue supporting the inspiring work you’re doing. Until then, thank you for your kindness and for making our time at the Junior School meaningful. Also, thank you to all the great staff, teachers and pupils that welcomed us at the Junior school.

I have spent 2 weeks here in Mbale and it was my 3rd project in Uganda. I hadn’t chosen this project initially because it had no prior review on Workaway. I am very thankful that Ssembatya convinced me to come. My experience in Uganda would not have been the same without my stay in Mbale.
Ssembatya is a dedicated hardworking and very generous man who runs a primary school for 280 underpriviledged children. He provides for everything to run the school as well as he can and also gives shelter to 15 kids who have nowhere else to go. On top of this, he also studies medicine in Kampala. Mbale is a poor area and the children would not go to school if it were not for him.
Be ready to get out of your comfort zone and see for yourself the many challenges poverty creates (water and sanitation, lack of basic school equipment, dilapidated buildings). Be also ready to meet truly kind human beings, eager to make things better, and who are doing everything in their power to educate the children in a safe environment. Ssembatya and his staff will welcome you as friends and they will get out of their way to make you happy and comfortable. A special thanks to Grace who was my guardian angel for the duration of my stay. You will stay forever in my heart.
The accommodation and the food were very good. I have been regularly overfed !
The children are not used to see foreigners (I might have been the first white person some of them have ever seen) and were a bit shy at first, but soon they were smiling and making jokes. The first week was mainly preparation for the school’s Sports day, and the second week was exam time. There is no strict schedule for volunteers. You need to be flexible. Any initiative you may have will be welcome.
If you want a real Ugandan immersion, this is the place. There are so many things to do and just showing up will make a big difference in the children’s life. Ssembatya deserves all the help he can get and you will not regret it.
